Understanding unusual referral amounts
Learn why your referral rewards might be smaller and how they’re calculated.
Occasionally, you might notice your referral reward is lower than anticipated. Understanding why this happens can clarify any confusion and set the right expectations.
Common reasons for reduced referral rewards
The primary reason referral rewards appear smaller is that the referred user already has existing credit in their Stripe account. These credits can originate from various sources such as subscription downgrades, early cancellations, refunds, or other billing adjustments.
Stripe automatically applies these credits to future transactions, reducing the real money the referred user spends. Referral rewards are calculated based on the actual amount paid by the user, excluding credits, so your reward will reflect the lower payment amount.
If you’re seeing sales with $0 amounts in your Creator Space, this is related to our recent migration from FirstPromoter to our new affiliate platform, Dub. During the migration, we imported your lead conversions and regenerated events like clicks, leads, and sales for your existing referrals. This process may have created some $0 sales entries, but rest assured—your actual revenue and commissions remain accurate and up to date.
Example of how referral rewards are calculated
Suppose you refer a user who selects a plan costing $10. If they already have $9.73 in credits available, they only pay $0.27 out-of-pocket. In this scenario, your referral bonus is calculated based on the $0.27 paid, rather than the full $10. This leads to a lower reward amount than you might initially expect.
